Looking for an office?

With the discontinuation of its regular print edition, the community newspaper & web site Eat the State! is also giving up its office space arrangement in which it has shared U-District office space (a large, carpeted room in a floor full of activist nonprofits) with Peace Action of Washington. Hence, PAW is now looking for a new co-tenant. If you know of a small political nonprofit that would like some cheap, convenient office digs, e-mail me at geov@peaceactionofwa.org. Thanks!

Remember Afghanistan?

You’d never know it from US media coverage (or lack thereof), but the US military is still engaged in two separate wars at the same time, still killing lots of civilians who happen to be in the wrong place (their homes) at the wrong time (whenever Americans are in the same time zone), and still getting its butts kicked:

Anti-nuke march in Seattle today!

Our friends at Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action are organizing a week of events to draw attention to this month's U.N. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York City.

Today's march is part of that week of events. Folks will meet at 1:30 on Sunday at the quad of Seattle University (two blocks south of 10th Ave. & E. Madison), marching at 2:30 to Westlake Park (4th & Pine) downtown. Join us!

Lawrence Wittner: Everett tonight, Poulsbo, Olympia Wednesday

If you're in Snohomish, Kitsap, or Thurston Counties, don't miss this rare chance to meet nuclear historian Lawrence Wittner. Tonight, he'll be at Zippy's Java Lounge, 1804 Hewitt Ave., at 7 PM. Tomorrow, it's a 1 PM lunch at the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, 16159 Clear Creek Rd. in Poulsbo. Then tomorrow evening, he'll be at the Timberland Regional Library in Olympia, 313 8th Ave. SE, at 5:30 PM.

At all three events - and at his appearances in Lake Forest Park and Seattle this Saturday - he'll be signing copies of his latest book, Confronting the Bomb: A Short History of the World Nuclear Disarmament Movement. Hope you can come!

Anti-nuclear historian & activist coming to Seattle, Pacific NW

Next week, Peace Action of Washington is pleased to sponsor several Pacific Northwest appearances by anti-nuclear weapon historian and activist Lawrence S. Wittner. He'll be in Seattle on Saturday, April 3, 7 PM at University Christian Church, 4759 15th Ave. NE in Seattle's University District.

The flyer for Wittner's Seattle appearance is here. Professor Wittner's full Northwest itinerary, and more background on him, follows the jump.

See you in Spokane

Our fine friends at the Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane are hosting an ambitious Peace and Economic Justice Action Conference in Spokane this Friday evening and all day Saturday (details and registration information here.) Peace Action of Washington Executive Director Geov Parrish (that's me) will be there, leading a Saturday morning workshop on "Tools for Ending the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq." Marcy Westerling of the Rural Organizing Project of Oregon keynotes.

Hope to see you there!

Afghan War vigil today!

After a busy fall, with Malalai Joya, the WTO People's Summit events, and a fabulous panel on Israel, the US, and Iran, PAW has been using early 2010 to plan for the coming year. Look for some exciting announcements in this space shortly. But meantime, we are rapidly approaching the 1000th US military casualty in Afghanistan since the invasion of 2001, and to honor our fallen soldiers -- and the untold thousands of Afghan civilians who have died as well -- there will be a candlelight vigil in Seattle today, from 6-8 PM, on the south shore of Green Lake (at N. 65th St.) We'll bring candles; you bring warm clothes and some friends, and together we'll share a spirit of remembrance and of determination to end this senseless loss of life.

People's Summit starts tonight!

Join us tonight and this weekend for a fantastic conference and series of events commemorating the 10th anniversary of Seattle's anti-WTO protests! We'll be tabling at Amy Goodman's Town Hall appearance tonight, and throughout the People's Summit plenaries and workshops Saturday & Sunday (including selling authentic 1999 anti-WTO t-shirts!). Peace Action of Washington will also lead a workshop on "Free Trade and Militarism" from 2-3:30 PM.

Don't miss this array of fantastic local and national speakers, remembering our past, analyzing our present, and, most importantly, strategizing for our future. Full schedule details are here.

Malalai Joya on KUOW and in Tacoma, Seattle, and Bellingham

She's coming! Feminist, former Afghan MP, and "the bravest woman in Afghanistan," Malalai Joya will be in Western Washington Nov. 11-12 -- Wednesday and Thursday -- this week. Here are the details:

PAW People's Summit workshop set

On Sunday morning, Nov. 29, the day before the 10th anniversary of the protests that shut down the Seattle meetings of the World Trade Organization, PAW will be hosting a workshop at Seattle Univ. entitled "Free Trade and Militarism."
